I can see why some people might not like the gay storyline but I thought it worked well because in canon Darcy interfered to stop Bingley taking an irrevocable step that could have lasting effects on his place in society, which is hard to replicate in a modern relationship, but in this context, living in a fairly conservative, small community then the step of becoming 'out' would be quite a big step and not one that Bingley could step back from. At first I wondered if it was a gimmick, but then I realised that it was actually a good way to replicate the situation between Bingley and Jane in modern times as marriage for Bingley in the early 1800s would be a pretty irrevocable step in a way that it isn't today, but in a small community, Bingley coming out after being unsure of his sexuality was a step that he'd have to be sure about before he committed to it.Cerihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01908542708518435282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3060237114571991862.post-50076997079173340612015-05-24T15:19:36.412+01:002015-05-24T15:19:36.412+01:00Thank you Anji.Thank you Anji.Cerihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01908542708518435282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3060237114571991862.post-51220684798177446762015-05-24T15:19:24.616+01:002015-05-24T15:19:24.616+01:00The blend of old and new was something I thought w...The blend of old and new was something I thought was unusual about this story. But not enough Darcy?! What's the point then? ;-) <br />At the beginning of the review, it asks what if JA found herself in modern-day CA. There's a picture on the internet of a "Jane Austen" reclining by the pool under an umbrella, with a phone held to her ear. That's what I imagine she'd be like, arranging to "do lunch", or more likely "do nuncheon," and referring to everyone as "dear". She wouldn't call anyone "darling" because that's what Caroline Bingley would do!Ginnanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3060237114571991862.post-29507650077211790502015-05-23T18:51:10.178+01:002015-05-23T18:51:10.178+01:00I am always up for any book which receives good re...I am always up for any book which receives good reviews, especially a P&P variation (my favorite). I'm always fascinated to see how an author brings a Jane Austen story into a modern setting showing how universal the stories really are. This one sounds good the way you describe blending the old with the new, the wit, and that is so cool that there are Bennet boy siblings too.Sophia Rosehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07909417504496472472noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3060237114571991862.post-44493884107533840302015-05-22T21:32:32.049+01:002015-05-22T21:32:32.049+01:00Ceri, please do not enter me as I just received my...Ceri, please do not enter me as I just received my print copy in the mail.
