My Planned Reads for January 2016

Happy New Year everybody! I will get on to my planned reads for January presently, but firstly I thought I'd give you some idea of what I have planned for this year. As ever in January, I am hoping for good things from the year to come and to become more organised in general.

Tsundoku - buying books and not reading themHave you ever heard of the word 'Tsundoku'? Well, I have a bad case of it, both in hard copy and electronic form. It's so enjoyable to buy new books, but despite my best intentions I buy more than I read. I have some books that are supposed to be excellent reads just languishing on my shelves. This year, this is something that needs to change, so I have decided to set myself a little challenge of reading one book from my hard copy pile, and one from my ebook treasure trove to try and reduce some of my Tsundoku problem.

I so enjoyed being part of Sophia Rose's Austenesque Group on Goodreads that I have joined up for the Austenesque Lovers TBR Pile Reading Challenge 2016 group too. If you are a Goodreads user I'd really recommend that you consider joining the group, as it's such a nice friendly place to chat about what you've read and share recommendations. There are a few nice events coming up, with a chance to choose somebody else's next read in February, and a group read of a book in March. My other challenge for the year I got from this group, where one of the other group members said she'd like to try and read something based on each of Austen's books this year which sounds like a good idea to me.

Book Cover: Unleashing Mr Darcy by Teri Wilson - UK version
I am still trying to catch up on some books I'd planned to read in previous months but didn't get to, such as 'Unleashing Mr Darcy' by Teri Wilson, which has been made into a TV movie and will be televised in the US later this month (Hallmark channel, 23 January). I don't know when or if it'll be shown here but I need to be ready!

Book cover: Emma and Elizabeth by Ann Mychal
I have planned to read Ann Mychal's 'Emma and Elizabeth' so many times but still haven't yet. This one is based on Jane Austen's unfinished book 'The Watsons'. I have heard really good things about this book and I genuinely want to read it but I never get to it. This is how long I've had this book, it's had two changes of cover since the version I have!

Book cover: Emma by Jane Austen, Penguin 200th Anniversary Annotated Edition
In addition, to celebrate the recent bicentenary of the first publication of Jane Austen's 'Emma' I treated myself to a new version of it, the Penguin 200th Anniversary annotated deluxe edition. I've read 'Emma' quite a few times, but not at all in the last few years, so it'll be good to reacquaint myself with the book.

I hope you have a wonderful 2016, filled with good times, good friends, good health and good reading!

  2. I didn't know there was a word for our 'condition'. Buahaha!

That is such a good plan for getting through your already purchased books. I will definitely cheer that sort of industry on.

Yay! Thanks for sharing about our group and the upcoming events. I know for a fact that at least a dozen folks found our group through you. I look for the fun year.

I need to read Emma & Elizabeth, too.

    1. Yes, we are both tsundoku sufferers, Sophia :) I hope my plan will work out and I'll get through some. I know I have some real gems if only I can get some time to read them.

I am happy to share the Goodreads group, it's been such a lovely group to be part of!

  3. I need to read Emma and Elizabeth b/c I won the sequel from Meredith! It is on my must read list this month. I did read Unleashing Mr. Darcy in anticipation of the TV movie and am reading P&P and Zombies as the movie is coming out next month.

    1. Congratulations on winning the sequel to Emma and Elizabeth, Sheila! I will look forward to seeing what you thought of the books.

It's been a while since I read Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, and I don't think I ever reviewed it, but I was a little disappointed that it wasn't more creative. I read your review of it on Goodreads and it matches what I remember thinking of the book.

    1. I am looking forward to reading them too, Mary, though I will have to make sure I carve out reading time as the rest of my life keeps encroaching!
